Summary: A hygroscopic, soft, pink mineral was discovered in Sinjar town, west of Mosul city. Wet chemical and X-ray diffraction analyses proved that the mineral has a composition of calcium chloride dihydrate CaCl₂·2H₂O, which has not been known in nature before. It is therefore a new mineral, and is named sinjarite after its locality.
