Giersdorf_00000861The lower Carboniferous Um Bogma Formation is well exposed at several localities in southwestern Sinai. It is easily distinguished from the underlying and the overlying clastic units as it is composed mainly of dolostone and marl with some siltstone and shale beds. The Um Bogma Formation shows wide variations in both thickness and lithology. In addition, it is characterized by the presence of diverse and widespread mineralizations. These include manganese and iron ores, secondary copper minerals and uranium minerals. The Formation unconformably overlies the lower Carboniferous Abu Thora Formation.
