Michelle_744The Triassic Shinarump member of the Chinle formation hosts the Blue Lizard Mine and other significant uranium deposits in the White Canyon District.
Michelle_745Ore minerals were deposited as replacement of wood and other organic material and as disseminations in the enclosing sandstone found in paleochannels.
Michelle_746The Blue Lizard Mine has been the source of several new uranyl sulfate minerals, the product of secondary mineralization. "The mineral association described here is of supergene origin, related to post-mining processes (the mine was closed in 1978), which include supergene oxidation of primary ores (uraninite, pyrite and chalcopyrite disseminated in lenses of organic matter) in the humid underground environment, which led to the formation of a variety of secondary minerals, mainly sulfates, occurring as efflorescent crusts on the surfaces of mine walls."
